EnergiaForum 08 in Tampere

Nuclear energy theme attracts
international guests to EnergiaForum 08

Workshop on Nuclear Energy is the first international event of its kind in Finland bringing into focus the Finnish nuclear energy knowhow. The workshop, arranged in connection with the EnergiaForum 08 event in Olkiluoto and Tampere in October 28 to 29, is expected to attract a great number of visitors from the EU as well as other European countries.

Nuclear power is again receiving increasing attention as a discussion topic within the European Union. The reason for this is, for example, the prevention of climate change, which challenges the countries to take concrete measures. Another significant aspect is Europe’s own energy safety. Many countries want to safeguard their energy supply with energy production of their own reducing the amount of exported energy, the portion of which is currently 54% of the energy consumption of the entire European Union. A third reason is the excellent competitiveness of the nuclear power in today’s emission trade environment.

Finnish nuclear energy knowhow receives global acknowledgement

The Finnish nuclear energy knowhow belongs to the international top class which is why the event was considered to be well suited for Finland. The workshop is a natural part of the entire EnergiaForum 08 event giving at the same time a new international flavor to the congress.

Pertti Salminen, head of international and EU affairs in Finnish Energy Industries, tells: “The main target of the workshop is to extensively exhibit and market the Finnish nuclear energy knowhow. In Finland the nuclear safety culture, for example, is at a good level compared to other countries. We want to share our knowhow with other countries showing an interest in nuclear power.”

The main organizers of the event are Finnish Energy Industries and the Brussels-based trade association for the nuclear energy industry FORATOM (European Atomic Forum), whose main purpose is to promote the use of nuclear power in the energy production within the EU by representing the interests of this industrial sector in the decision-making of the Union.

International guests and recognized nuclear power experts

Visitors are expected mainly from the current nuclear energy countries in the EU as well as from the other parts of Europe. During two days, the workshop provides an interesting overview particularly for those considering further nuclear power construction. Finland’s nuclear energy waste management systems - being the most advanced in the whole world - will certainly also draw attention. The visitors will be provided an opportunity to see the new Olkiluoto 3 construction site and a location illustrating the nuclear waste maintenance systems.

The experts in the workshop are people working in the core of the nuclear power affairs in the European Commission and Parliament and Finnish nuclear energy professionals who will present their views on the role of the nuclear power in the prevention of climate change. One of the international experts is Peter Faross, Director of the Nuclear Energy Unit in the European Commission.

Nuclear power impressively displayed at the Energy 08 Fair

EnergiaForum 08, Energy 08 Fair and the related congresses are an important meeting platform for the energy industry professionals. This autumn the energy fair is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Exhibitors amount to 250 organizations including all those demanding a sixth nuclear power plant as well as a great number of decision-makers and operators from the power plant industry. The nuclear energy theme plays a significant role during the fair and organizations of this energy sector will have a centralized exhibition area.
